SENTENCING 2008 CONFERENCE

This Conference follows on from the Sentencing: Principles, Perspectives & Possibilities conference (2006) and the Confidence in the Courts conference (2007). It seeks to continue the discourse on a range of sentencing issues, including:

national consistency in sentencing
sentencing in magistrate courts
sentence indication
discounting sentences, suspended sentences, indefinite detention
Crown appeals against sentence
Indigenous offenders & customary law
• judicial descretion v legislative sentences
sentencing for environmental offences
juries -- a role in sentencing?
particular offenders -- mental illness, intellectual disabilities, children
