ACADEMIC STAFF I Jo-Anne Weinman

Jo-Anne WeinmanJo-Anne Weinman is a Research Associate at the National Centre for Indigenous Studies.

Before taking up her position at the NCIS, Jo-Anne was a visiting scholar at the Australian Centre for Indigenous History in the Research School of Social Sciences (Australian National University) where she worked as a research assistant for the Director, Professor Ann McGrath, while continuing research on her doctoral thesis. Jo-Anne completed a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws at Monash University.

Her PhD, supported by an Australian Postgraduate Award, examines constructions of indigeneity in native title jurisprudence in Australia and Norway. Her Honours thesis, entitled Deconstructing the Politics of Exclusion, analysed the relevance of the 'excludability' element in classifying interests as proprietary and involved the application of critical legal studies and discourse analysis theories to judgments in common law jurisdictions.

Jo-Anne's research interests lie primarily in native title and other indigenous rights to land, waters and resources in Australia and internationally, in particular in relation to Australian Indigenous peoples and the Sami of Northern Europe. She has a special interest in international human rights law and constitutional law. Her interests also include the reconciliation process, Indigenous self-determination, self-governance models and measures, and the limits and contradictions of sovereignty.
