GUIDELINES FOR INTERNATIONAL VISITING
SCHOLARS AT NCIS
Funding:
NCIS provides a fixed annual budget for the Visiting Scholars
scheme. Funding for Visiting Scholars will normally will be
on a 50:50 basis between NCIS and another University entity
such as a College and will normally include travel to Canberra,
accommodation at ANU and a weekly gratuity which may be varied
upwards to $250.
Selection: At the beginning of each year NCIS
will canvass ANU staff recommendations for the names of possible
Visiting Scholars. Recommendations by ANU staff will imply a
willingness on the part of the sponsor (as well as NCIS) to
mentor and/or host the Visiting Scholar. Potential scholars
will be invited, in conjunction with their sponsor, to liaise
with the Director of the NCIS (or delegate) to co-develop an
application for the Vice Chancellor's visiting fund.
Program: Visiting
Scholars will work closely with their sponsor on a nominated
project. Scholars' activities may include lectures, seminars,
meeting students and staff, presentations and production of
academic papers. The period will be normally be between one
to two months, but may be extended. Visiting Scholars will work
closely with staff of the NCIS on a range of activities which
may include lectures, seminars, meeting students and staff,
presentations and the production of academic papers. Distinguished
international Visiting Scholars will make at least one public
presentation, one major ANU presentation and several invitation
lectures. Visiting Scholars will be profiled on the ANU, College
of Law and NCIS websites and e-Newsletter and prepare a Final
Report on conclusion of their visit about their activities while
at the NCIS.
Application Annexures
1. a cover letter setting out (i) the anticipated
dates of visit, (ii) the title of the specific research project,
(iii) the names of two academic and two personal referees;
2. a brief curriculum vitae outlining past
and present experiences relevant to the proposed research and
activities to be undertaken;
3. a one to two page research proposal setting
out the specific research to be undertaken while an international
Visiting Scholar; and
4. two testimonials from recognised Indigenous
leaders supporting the outputs, standing and benefits likely
to accrue to the ANU from the proposed residency.
