in dialogue with native americans

NCIS presented the fourth annual ANU Dialogue in the Indigenous Peoples of the World series in collaboration with the Embassy of the United States of America. It focussed on the political and legal issues relevant to Native American territories. Previous Dialogues in this series included Indigenous Australians, the Maori people of New Zealand and the Saami people of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

The Dialogue was moderated by NCIS Director, Professor Mick Dodson. Four renowned speakers debated why Australia, the United States, Canada and New Zealand voted against the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and on the global struggle for the recognition of Indigenous rights to land. Professor Marcia Langton from the University of Melbourne and Dr Lisa Strelein, from the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies and an Adjunct Scholar at the NCIS, engaged with Professors Dalee Dorough and Rob Williams in a lively discussion on the territorial and human rights of Native Americans and Indigenous Australians.

It was subsequently features in the second issue of the NCIS e-Newsletter.

This was presented in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Sciences & Law and the National Europe Centre. Professor Ian Chubb AO (President and Vice-Chancellor of the ANU) opened the program with a welcome to country by Matilda House. Her Excellency Anelli Puura-Markala (Ambassador of Finland), His Excellency Leonid Moiseev (Ambassador of the Russian Federation), Pekka Aikio (President of the Finnish Saami Parliament) and Jan Henry Kiskitalo (Director of Norwegian Saami Special Eduation Support) attended the event representing each nation that the Saami inhabit
