Commencing the GDLP

For many of you the GDLP will provide a new challenge. This program is where you make the transition from being a law graduate to a graduate lawyer. Our teaching and learning approach is designed to build confidence and equip you with the competencies required for the world of legal practice.

Skills for Practice is a pre requisite course

Skills for Practice intensive is a foundation course in the GDLP.
From January 2008 completion of the Skills for Practice intensive
is a pre-requisite before commencing other GDLP courses.

Students may enrol in Legal Practice Experience before completing the Skills for Practice intensive but must complete the intensive:

(i) as soon as possible after enrolling and
(ii) before starting GDLP coursework.

Flexible Learning

In the GDLP we try to offer you as much flexibility as we can in terms of location, timing and mode of study.

However, there are certain elements of the program about which we are not flexible. This is because we maintain a high standard of academic and professional quality - we want you to reach the standards of a competent graduate lawyer. For this reason, when it comes to content, pace, intensity and assessment, study in the GDLP can be very demanding and requires a commitment from the student.

Study Material

Study material for all courses is available online. Many courses also provide printed material. Check the course information page to see which courses supply printed material.

New students will need to collect their print material during the "Skills for Practice" intensive week.

Continuing students (who have enrolled on time) will have their print material mailed to them for receipt by the commencement of the course.

If you have not received your materials by the course commencement date, send an email to the Service Office with a copy (cc:) to the ANU Legal Workshop so that we are aware of your situation.

Assessment

Assessment is an important part of the GDLP program and focuses on developing practical skills.

You will find detailed information about assessment on each course website. Each lecturer will direct how to submit assessment items. For more information regarding assessment and progress requirements refer to the PLT handbook.

Time Zones

Legal Workshop students live in various time zones throughout Australia and overseas. So please be aware that this could have an impact on the timely submission of your assessment.

For example, assessment items due at 5:00 pm, means 5:00pm Canberra Time (Eastern Daylight Time in summer and Eastern Standard Time in winter).
