Welcome to ACT Law Week 09
Dear ANU College of Law staff and students,
I draw your attention to the ACT Law Week 2009 which is a major initiative of the ACT Law Society which aligns with Law Weeks held in other States and Territories . The theme this year is ‘Law and the Community’. The theme points to fundamental purposes of law, the essential work of non-profit legal services such as Community Legal Centres, and to the contributions of the legal profession to and in the community.
I am very pleased to pass on the invitation to ANU College of Law staff and students to attend the launch of Law Week at 1pm on 7th May 2009 at the ACT Supreme Court and to also bring other Law Week activities to your attention.
I also take the opportunity to recognise the contributions of our staff and students to the community and particularly those made through ANU College of Law clinical law programs. Through these programs ANU law students help provide legal assistance to over 500 clients a year in the ACT. Similar to the way in which doctors are trained, clinical law programs also focus on fundamental issues such as the meaning of ‘justice’ and factors which contribute to ‘access to justice’.
I commend staff and students who are participating in Law Week. This includes the students undertaking the Clinical Youth Law Program and the Community Law Clinical Program who are assisting with the Market Day on 14th May 2009.
