Software Library

Your work computers will come with a few pre-installed software packages such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and EndNote. We have a large software library here should you need additional software for the purposes of publishing, image manipulation, foreign language support, voice recognition, etc.

Much of this software can be installed easily and almost instantly by us at the IT&C Unit, other packages may only be installed if you have special requirements or a particular project for us to issue a software licence for that product.

Either way, any extra software installations should be made from the IT&C Unit, so if you have a need or interest in installing software (even something as small as iTunes), please come and see us.

The following catalogue is not our complete range of products, but it should give you a good indication of the software we can provide and support you with:

Free to use
The following software is freely available to install on your workstation. Please contact us as these programs have been customised for use on the Faculty computers.

Course Genie Web publishing Course Genie allows you to easily convert your Microsoft Word documents to Web Pages. This is most often used to make WebCT courses without having to learn programs like Dreamweaver.
Google Earth Amazing distraction Want to see your house from space? scope out the best beaches on the other side of the world? or just simply sit back and travel the world from your office. Google Earth gives you access to satellite imagery covering the entire Earth. You can't read the print on people's newspapers, but in some areas it's pretty close.

Licenced Software

The following software requires a licence fee to install. Please contact us about pricing for this software:

Adobe Acrobat 6 Print and Web publishing Adobe Acrobat gives you the ability to create PDF files directly from Microsoft Word. For advanced editing, it also allows you to open PDF files, change text, insert pages, combine multiple PDF files into one, and then lock the file from further editing.
Adobe InDesign 2 Print publishing Adobe InDesign is an advanced publishing package for creating brochures, flyers, any printed material that needs a lot of control over the formatting of text and images.
Adobe Pagemaker 6.5 Print publishing Pagemaker is a print publishing software package used for the same purposes as InDesign.
Pagemaker is an older product but it is easier to use than InDesign.
Adobe Photoshop 5.5 Image Editing Photoshop is an image editing program that comes in very handy for resizing huge scanned images, brightening up dark photos, saving images for use in Web pages and generally anything that needs doing to an image.
Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 Voice recognition This software allows you to speak to your computer, giving you the ability to dictate directly into Microsoft Word and many other applications. If you do a lot of typing for extended periods of time, maybe you should give your hands a break and consider using this.

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Web publishing Dreamweaver is a web site creation tool. You can use Dreamweaver a bit like Word to create simple Web pages, or you can go as far as editing the raw page code to create complex interactive web sites.
Microsoft Visio 2003 Diagram creation Visio is a workflow and diagram program, allowing you to draw diagrams of processes, organisational structures and electronic circuits. Anytime you need a flowchart, block diagram or building plan, use Visio.
