The aims of the Society are to:

The principal activity of the Society is the convening of an Annual Meeting and Conference which has established itself as the principal forum for international lawyers in Australia and New Zealand. Conferences are held in either Canberra or Wellington, and occasionally are jointly convened with associate professional bodies such as the American Society of International Law, and International Law Association. The Society has also commenced a series of occasional workshops and seminars in order to respond to current international law events such as the September 2001 terrorist attacks on the US, 2002 Bali Bombings, and 2003 Iraq War.

The Society has two principal partner organisations which assist in the conduct of its affairs: the Centre for International and Public Law, The Australian National University (Australia) currently acts as the ANZSIL secretariat. They also organise the Annual
Conference of the Society when it is held in Canberra and publish the Australian Year Book of International Law. The other partner organisation is the New Zealand Centre for Public Law, Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand).

The Society has a program of financial support for those undertaking unpaid internships. Please see the guidelines and application form for further details.
