International Court of Justice Traineeship Program

Attention final year students and graduates of up to five years standing.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has again invited the ANU College of Law to present a list of candidates for an ICJ student traineeship for 2008-2009, following the ANU’s inaugural participation in the scheme in 2006.

The ANU College of Law provides a scholarship of $25,000 to support participation in the traineeship scheme. Our two trainees so far have been Rebecca Jenkin (2006-2007) and Robyn Briese (2007-2008).

For all the details, see Award Conditions

In brief:

  • You work as an Associate to an ICJ judge
  • The traineeship runs from September 2008 for 9 months
  • Selection criteria: outstanding academic record in and commitment to international law; also any relevant post-graduation experience
  • Language skills: proficiency in either English or French and a very good knowledge of the other
  • The ICJ takes no responsibility for financing the traineeship, or for arranging travel or accommodation, or for insurance or for costs arising from accident or illness
  • The trainee is responsible for expenses in excess of the scholarship amount
  • The ANU selects a short list from which the ICJ chooses the successful candidate
  • The 2008 ANU Selection Committee is Dean Michael Coper and Professors Hilary Charlesworth and Don Rothwell
  • Eligibility extends to current final year students and recent graduates (up to 5 years out)
  • The ICJ appears to favour recent graduates

Important dates:

  • Monday 14 January 2008:
Last day for receipt of applications (letter, resume, transcripts, references).
  • Thursday 17 January 2008:
ANU Selection Committee meets to determine short list of candidates to go forward to ICJ.
  • Thursday 31 January 2008:
Short list must be received by ICJ.
Important Note:
Because of late notice of the 2008-2009 scheme from the ICJ, the ANU this year will not run a two-stage process of expressions of interest followed by full applications, but is calling immediately for the full applications.
