Admission
Information
Applicants for enrolment in the Law School must first meet the requirements
for general admission to the University. Admission to the University does
not guarantee enrolment in the Law School. Entry levels may vary annually.
The Law School may make selective offers to those who fall marginally
below the cut-off, on the basis of demonstrated aptitude or motivation
to study law, as evidenced by a brief statement of no more than one page.
Applicants who are interested in being considered by this criterion should
contact the Student Administration Office.
Transferees: applicants who have completed not less
than the equivalent of a full first year load of a non-law degree program
in minimum time (whether full-time or part-time) at the ANU or another
Australian tertiary education institution may seek to transfer to a program
course with law. Normally, the combined program requires a further four
or four and a half years of study.
As a guide, to be ranked for placement, applicants
should aim to achieve a weighted average of credit
or better (HD=7, D=6, Cr=5, P=4) in their tertiary
studies. Some weighting is also placed on secondary
results, so the lower the UAI score obtained the higher
the tertiary results need to be.
Graduates of other disciplines: Graduates are considered
for entry into the new Juris Doctor (JD) degree program and not the LLB(G)
which is no longer available to new students. Applicants for the JD are
ranked for selection in order of academic merit based on performance in
any previous qualification. A successful applicant whose previous studies
in a non-law degree included law courses will not generally receive status
for those courses. However, in the case of compulsory ourses an exemption
from such courses will usually be granted.
The level of attainment required for entry into the JD in a particular
year depends on the over-all number and standard of applications. As a
guide, to be ranked for placement, applicants should have achieved a credit
average or better in their previous degree (HD=7, D=6, CR=5, P=4). It
should be noted, however, that some weighting is still placed on secondary
results. Applicants who do not meet this requirement may submit a one
page statement direct to the Law School setting out other relevant details
that demonstrate an aptitude or commitment to the study of law.
Mature Age Entry: a small number of places is available
for persons who are not eligible for consideration in the above category
and who present results achieved in a university special entry or preparation
scheme. For more information, please contact ANU Admissions on admiss.enq@law.anu.edu.au
Transferring From Other Law Schools: candidates seeking
to transfer to the ANU Law School from other recognised Australian Law
Schools are considered on academic merit. However, an applicant who falls
below the cut-off requirement, but who has compelling reasons for transferring
to the ANU may submit those reasons direct to the Law School, ANU, Canberra,
ACT 0200. To obtain an ANU Law degree at least 50% of the courses required
for the degree must be completed at ANU. Applicants need to have completed
not less than the equivalent of a full first year load (whether full-time
or part-time) at another Australasian tertiary education institution,
and must have an academic record which would not have infringed the academic
performance rules of the ANU.
Non-award-examinable enrolment (including cross-institutional):
The College has a limited number of places available for persons seeking
to enrol in courses offered by the Law School on a non-award-examinable
basis (including tuition-fee-paying enrollees and cross-institutional
enrollees). Students in this category are advised to consult the Law School
for details. Application forms and details of closing dates may be obtained
from the Admissions Office. A late application charge will apply to applications
received after the closing date.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisite school or tertiary subjects
for law studies. However, an important skill of the
intending law student is an ability to write clear,
concise and correct English. High marks in English
may improve an applicant's ranking for admission where
the UAI is marginally below the cut-off.
Applicants for the combined program of Bachelor of
Actuarial Studies/Bachelor of Laws are required to
have ACT Advanced Mathematics Extended double major
(188+) or NSW 4u Mathematics (94Ð100).
Applicants for the combined program of Bachelor of
Commerce/Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Economics/Bachelor
of Laws must have completed the equivalent of NSW
2-unit Mathematics or an equivalent qualification
from other states.
Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Laws applicants are
advised that for some science courses, specific knowledge
of mathematics, physics or chemistry is assumed. Details
are available from the Faculty of Science.
