NINTH session, permanent forum on indigenous issues

Professor Mick Dodson was appointed as Special Rapporteur with Carsten Smith to undertake a study about Indigenous fishing rights in the seas. They will report under this mandate to the Permanent Forum in its upcoming Ninth Session in April 2010. The theme of the Ninth Session is 'Indigenous peoples: development with culture and identity; articles 3 and 32 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples'.

The Australian Government officially adopted the United National Declaration of the Rights of the Indigenous Peoples. NCIS Director, Professor Mick Dockson, responded to the Government statement in his capacity as Pacific Community Member and Forum Rapporteur - United National Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Professor Mick Dodson was appointed Special Rapporteur at the Sixth Session of the Permanent Forum with the theme 'Territories, Lands and Natural Resources'. He reported under this mandate to the Permanent Forum in May 2009. For a list of the body's current members click here.

pre-sessional meeting

Karasjok (Norway), 12-21 March 2009

At the end of the Seventh Session, there was an announcement on behalf of the Norwegian government inviting Permanent Forum members to attend a pre-sessional meeting in Karasjok (Norway) before the Eighth Session. Professor Mick Dodson will be attending in his capacity as the regional Pacific representative member of the Permanent Forum. As well as closed meetings for Permanent Forum members, there were opportunities to meet Norwegian government representatives, attend public events and to meet with indigenous Saami people of the region including the Swedish Saami Parliament President Mr. Lars Anders-Baer and Norwegian Saami Chair of the Permanent Forum from 2002, Ole Henrik Magga.
