Research into Creating a Representative Indigenous Voice at the National level
Description:
A report is being prepared for the HREOC ATSI Social Justice Commissioner, Mr Tom Calma, addressing the following key issues:
(1) What lessons can be learnt from mechanisms for representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at the national level that have previously existed?
(2) What options are there for ensuring that a national Indigenous representative body is sustainable?
(3) What lessons can be learned from mechanisms for representing Indigenous peoples that have been established in other countries?

The web site aims to highlight successful programs, review options and identify the necessary elements of successful programs. The project is based on experience which tells us that the most effective programmes are those created and implemented by local individuals and groups, and ones in which Governments work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The web hosted report has just been delivered to the Attorney General's Department.

NCIS Indigenous Family Violence Clearing House Research Project
In 2004 the NCIS received a grant from ATSIS to carry out research on Indigenous community initiated family violence programs around Australia, with the idea of developing an accessible interactive web based exchange of ideas. This will be designed to support Indigenous practitioners working on or developing family violence programs in response to the needs of their communities.
This proposal emerged from previous discussions which were concerned with the lack of Indigenous corporate knowledge nationally about what was being developed and trialled across the country in Indigenous communities in relation to violence prevention, and what was and was not working.
This project is hoping to identify user needs and enable better networking between community practitioners in the field of violence management and prevention. NCIS will develop a national, longitudinal information base for use as a resource to Indigenous communities on what successes various initiatives are achieving and why.
