Legal Practice Experience

Legal Practice Experience (LPE) is a project that is undertaken within the compulsory Professional Practice Core. The LPE project has three components:

1. A 20, 40, 60 or 80 day placement in an approved legal
    workplace

2. Reporting on the placement and

3. LPEOnline - an online component consisting of web-based
    discussion postings.

Placement

The number of placement days you choose determines the amount of elective coursework you are required to complete. That is:

Legal Workshop will assist students to obtain 20 day placements in the ACT. There are also opportunities for ACT based students to undertake part of their placement at the Legal Aid Clinic. Legal Workshop will also assist students in other jurisdictions as far as possible to obtain placements.

In some circumstances placement may be approved retrospectively. To apply for approval for your placement please fill out an Application for Approval of Legal Practice Experience form  and return it to Rose Coppin:

Reporting on Placement

The student provides a final reflective report at the end of the placement which focuses on their legal skills development. More details are available here

 

LPEOnline

Either during or after your placement you will be required to participate in a series of web based discussion postings where you share your experiences of legal practice with other students. We will advise you further about this discussion forum when your placement is approved. You do not enrol in LPEOnline.

Legal Practice Experience

Legal Aid Clinical Program

This graduate clinical program is provided by the Legal Workshop in partnership with Legal Aid ACT in Canberra. Completion of the Legal Aid Clinical (LAC) Program counts towards GDLP LPE requirements. After enrolling in the GDLP students may apply to undertake the LAC Program. Students must complete the Becoming a Practitioner intensive  before starting the LAC Program. For more details please refer to the LAC Program Booklet


Regional, Rural and Remote CLCs

The Legal Workshop is partnering with the National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLC) to provide opportunities for our GDLP students to undertake LPE in regional, rural and remote (RRR) Community Legal Centres.
