The Australian National University ANU Legal Workshop - Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice
ANU College of Law

Program Outline

The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) is a flexible online program and can be completed in six months or over a three year period.

The GDLP is made up of three components:
    1. Becoming a Practitioner intensive
    2. Professional Practice Core
    3. Elective Coursework

Becoming a Practitioner Intensive

The GDLP begins with the Becoming a Practitioner Intensive, a one-week course conducted face-to-face. This course is an important foundation and introduces the skills that students will require in order to complete the GDLP and become a competent practitioner. The Becoming a Practitioner Intensive is a prerequisite for beginning your other coursework.

Professional Practice Core

The PPC course will take place over a 16 week period during which students will work together within a simulated legal practice environment to complete five projects:

  1. Professional Practice project
  2. Property Law project
  3. Civil Litigation project
  4. Commercial and Corporate project
  5. Legal Practice Experience project

These projects will be sequenced within the time frame. The PPC will give students the opportunity to fulfil the following professional competency areas and requirements:

  • Lawyer's Skills
  • Problem Solving
  • Work Management and Business Skills
  • Trust and Office Accounting
  • Ethics and Professional Responsibility
  • Civil Litigation Practice
  • Commercial and Corporate Practice
  • Property Law Practice
  • Required workplace training

The projects involve students applying and extending the skills introduced in Becoming a Practitioner.

The PPC aims to engage students in authentic learning using an Integrated Learning Environment (ILE), which simulates legal practice.

The Legal Practice Experience project  involves a 20, 40, 60 or 80 day placement in an approved legal environment. More information about this can be found at Legal Practice Experience
