The Faculty of Law established the Centre for Commercial Law (CCL) at the Australian National University in 1998, under the Directorship of Professor Stephen Bottomley, Professor of Commercial Law at the ANU.

CCL's central mission of advancing the body of knowledge of commercial law in Australia, is achieved through a number of objectives:

  • To be a national leader in private and government commercial law research and teaching.
  • To be a centre of excellence in private and government commercial law reform advice and policy evaluation.
  • To be a national forum for academics, practitioners and regulators working in private and government commercial law.

The Centres' functions include commercial law research and teaching in the Law Faculty, and conducting seminars, workshops and consultancies for legal practitioners, government and the business community on commercial law issues, particularly as they affect government commercial practice.

The Centres' research specialises in emerging commercial law areas, particularly corporatisation, privatisation, government contracting, globalisation and international aspects of commercial law. Research and projects undertaken at the Centre also covers the 'traditional' areas of commercial practice such as bankruptcy and insolvency, companies, securities, contracts, equity, intellectual property, personal property securities, trade practices and taxation.

The activities of CCL is sponsored by Blake Dawson Waldron.
