NEWS FROM JESSICA ALLEN - INTERN AT THE U.S HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Jessica Allen, currently studying Arts and Law, was offered an internship position at the U.S Democratic Office of the Resources Committee.

"Even before spending a semester at the University of Pennsylvania taking both law and political science courses, I wanted to get some practical experience in the US political system. The courses I took at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) were excellent and it was a great experience, both in learning about U.S. political processes and becoming aware of the many opportunities in the US. So whilst there I applied for an internship position with the U.S. House of Representatives Resources Commitee knowing that it would complement what I had learned in the international environmental law course I was taking at UPenn. I am now doing a paid internship with the Democratic Staff of the Resources Committee which I started in May and I will be working there until the end of July on a full time basis. As an intern I assist the committee staff with research and preparing background materials for the Democratic members of the Committee. The jurisdiction of the Committee covers Energy and Mineral Resources, Fisheries and Oceans, Forests and Forest Health, National Parks and Water and Power. The public law focus at ANU has certainly served me well and I look forward to an exciting two months ahead."

Image Above: The bronze head of Sir Robert Garran was originally commissioned by the “Convocation” of the (then) Canberra University College. When it was completed, however, they thought it was not a sufficiently good likeness and refused to accept it or pay. Some time later, the staff of the College, who knew of the bronze head but did not agree with the earlier assessment, decided to buy it themselves as a gesture to Sir Robert and present it to the College. At that time (1952) Sir Robert was Chairman of the Council of the Canberra University College, and Professor Pentony was Chairman of the College Staff Association. The bronze head was duly presented by Professor Pentony on behalf of the University Council. John Flemming, later the first Sir Robert Garran Professor of Law, said he would be pleased to display the head in the (then) Department of Law, and there it has remained.
